The bowls are completely functional.  No dyes or stains are used.  I do not recommend any foods that will leave color - such as beets, tomato sauces,...  To care for the wood, it should be oiled at least a few times a year (olive oil, Beesoil, mineral oil), never refrigerated or microwaved or placed in any sort of oven, and should be dried immediately and thoroughly whenever cleaned.
